If I only had 24 hours in Suzhou, I'd spend the whole morning at the Humble Administrator's Garden, wait for the sunset at Subo Li in the afternoon, then stroll down Pingjiang Road to find a teahouse and listen to Pingtan. This is a route tracing the landscape lineage from the Ming to the Qing dynasty. Starting from the East Garden, you walk all the way to the Central Garden and finish in the West Garden.

Lanxue Hall is the first hall you see after entering the garden. Its name comes from Li Bai's line: "Standing alone between heaven and earth, the clear breeze scatters blue snow." The interior is simply furnished, with white walls, dark tiles, and vermilion-painted beams and columns.

North of Lanxue Hall is a small waterside pavilion called Furong Pavilion, with a lotus pond in front of it. Continuing west from Furong Pavilion brings you to the Central Garden. This square pavilion has a circular moon gate on each of its four sides.

Standing inside and looking out in the four directions is like viewing four paintings of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Hall of Distant Fragrance is the main hall of the Humble Administrator's Garden and the core of the Central Garden. It's a four-sided hall, three bays wide, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows on all sides, offering a full view of the surrounding scenery.

The hall's name comes from Zhou Dunyi's "Ode to the Lotus": "Its fragrance grows purer the farther it carries." Xiao Feihong is a covered bridge. Standing on it and looking west, Xiangzhou is just a short distance away.

Xiangzhou in the Humble Administrator's Garden combines five architectural forms—pavilions, terraces, towers, chambers, and boats—into one structure. Its name draws on the classical allusion of "gathering fragrant herbs on the islet." Heifeng Simian Pavilion sits on a small island in the center of the pond.

This hexagonal pavilion is where three garden paths meet, and from here you can take in the entire garden. In the Thirty-Six Mandarin Ducks Hall, you can see colors that drifted across the ocean from Europe: these blue glass panes were bought from Europe by the garden's late-Qing owner. The windows are inlaid with diamond-shaped blue-purple glazed tiles.

Yushui Tongzuo Xuan: a small fan-shaped pavilion built on the southeast corner of an islet in the West Garden's water. "With whom shall I sit?" actually comes from a poem by Su Dongpo: "With whom shall I sit? The bright moon, the clear breeze, and me." Just a few steps outside the Humble Administrator's Garden is the Suzhou Museum, designed by I.M. Pei.

The museum's design concepts are geometry, light, and ink wash. I.M. Pei once said, "Architecture has life. Though it is solidified, it embodies humanistic thought." The Suzhou Museum is the best proof of his words, using modern geometric language to express Suzhou's cultural heritage.

Inside the museum, three treasures are worth seeing. The first is a Five Dynasties celadon lotus bowl. The second is a Northern Song pearl sarira reliquary pagoda.

The third is a Song dynasty painted shrine of the Four Heavenly Kings. These three pieces sit there as a thousand years of light flows over them, still unchanged. From the Humble Administrator's Garden to the Suzhou Museum, and then to Pingjiang Road, you've experienced all of Suzhou.
